Out West 4: 70 & 12 Betwixt and Between

From Arches we had a long way to go to get to Zion.  And so many parks in between.  We took Scenic Byway 12 across Utah, and it was simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. So beautiful it has its own webpage.  A decent portion of 12 has one lane and cliffs on both sides with no railings. (Check out the aerial  photo on the website).  There are steep grades and switch backs, but the view is worth it.  I wouldn't recommend this route for anyone afraid of heights, I had to make the hubby drive it.

All these photos were taken within a few yards of the car.  If you are planning a trip this way you can check out the interactive map as well.  Absolutely breathtaking. I wish I could have filmed the entire drive through the tight twists and turns.

There were many interesting stops, hotels, shops, gas stations, rock shops, and other tourist traps along the way.  We picked up a couple small souvenirs along the route. There was a native american flute shop that had pretty decent prices on their wares as well.  Our favorite site was a small camp ground tucked into the canyon. Unfortunately they were booked for the night.  But we will plan on staying there when we travel through Utah again.

The extra wide patch of dirt here in the pull off we are standing on, don't become disillusioned for any reason and think this highway has shoulders.

Hanging off the side of the scariest highway ever!
